PODCASTS

Michael Hull has been podcasting since 2009, starting as a guest host on the Lost Mythos show. He is currently the producer of two shows: A Very Good Year and Black Diplomats. He oversees all technical aspects of the shows including mix and master, as well as contributing to writing, script development, interviews, and logistics.

He was previously the producer of the Fun City Cinema podcast, released in conjunction with author Jason Bailey’s book of the same name.

Black Diplomats

Founded in 2020 and led by Terrell Jermaine Starr, Black Diplomats is the go-to podcast for those who want relatable content on global affairs that doesn’t center the perspectives of white men.

Starr has lived part-time in Ukraine for more than a decade and has been reporting on the ground from the country since the Russian invasion of 2022.

Few foreign policy shows are led by Black people or center the opinions, experiences and expertise of people of color. Black Diplomats is one exception. Guests are mostly people of color and people who are indigenous to the regions the episodes focus on.

Fun City Cinema

Though the American motion picture industry began in New York City, it migrated to California in the 1910s – just as the city was becoming the financial and cultural capital of the country. Over the century that followed, New York experienced trials and tribulations, boom periods and downfalls; that roller-coaster ride was documented, often gleefully, by the films shot in New York during those years. Many of them took the danger and speed of the city as their implicit (and often explicit) subject, creating a perception of “Fun City” that added to its allure, and may have further fueled its decline.

In Fun City Cinema, author Jason Bailey crafts two intertwining histories: of a great American city in flux, and the classic films and legendary filmmakers that took their inspiration from its grittiness and splendor, creating what we can now view as “accidental documentaries” of the city’s moods and modes.
